Campbell Johnston Clark were formed in September 2010 by three ex Partners of leading international commerce firm Holman Fenwick Willan. The three founding Partners, who together have more than 50 years experience in their expert fields gained from firms such as Clifford Chance, Elborne Mitchell and Watson Farley Williams, perceived a change in the shipping and international trade markets, where clients were moving away from faceless global law firms and towards smaller bespoke operations that could work more directly with them and create a better and more effective relationship. This is a trend that has also been seen and embraced by a number of niche departments of magic circle firms. The founding Partners also felt that the time was right to embrace the opportunities being created by the overall review of the structure and provision of legal services in this jurisdiction by creating a new firm that could be proactive in relation to clients service demands and innovative so far as fee structure and billing issues were concerned.
The firm, which is 100% committed and focussed on the maritime field (both contentious and non contentious work) now boasts 25 employees and fee earners including two Marine Manager consultants (both with extensive sea time and practical experience), a specialist transactional consultant and ex Partner of a leading city shipping practice and a third consultant who is the current director of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton. Among their client base are a number of UK Stock Exchange listed and US Fortune 500 companies as well as some of the leading international names in shipping and the oil and gas industry.
As part of its innovative approach to the practice of law the firm embraces flexible working conditions for all its staff members, actively promotes continuing education and legal career development opportunities and works without fee earning targets for fee earners. The firm retains 2 trainees per year (application details available from the website) and is a proud sponsor of the King's Student Law Review.
